MA studies (2 year course)

Full-time studies last 4 semesters. The number of class hours is 800.

The amount of ECTS points is 120.

MA cultural studies are intended for graduates of faculties in the humanities or social undergraduate studies. The aim of the studies is to prepare graduates to independent participation in various forms of cultural activity. In addition to the expanded knowledge of cultural anthropology, cultural philosophy, art theory, methods of cultural studies, methods of field research and the culture market, interpretation of cultural texts, students have the opportunity to develop their interests and practical skills in one of three specialties:

  • Communication in digital media
  • The culture of Podlasie
  • Film studies - media studies

The speciality offer proceeds from few conditions. First of all, from the specificity of interdisciplinary research conducted by the Białystok cultural community. Secondly, the cultural diversity of Podlasie based on the tradition of meeting cultures requires conducting research on the culture of the region and preparing specialists for work in local cultural institutions. Thirdly, the proposed specialties fit, as we assume, in the needs of the local labor market.

The graduate is prepared for active and independent work in institutions and organizations related to the culture. In addition, he has instilled habits of lifelong learning and professional development and is prepared to take up research challenges and undertake third degree (doctoral) studies.

COMMUNICATION IN DIGITAL MEDIA

The specialty, having a university character, gives students the knowledge, competences and skills that will help them find their place on the labor market. Graduates are prepared to work primarily in institutions representing the creative industry: in the editorial offices of online portals, marketing agencies, advertising and PR agencies, in the promotion departments of cultural institutions, as well as in the promotion departments of various types of business entities.

A graduate in the field of communication in digital media will have extensive knowledge of the latest information technologies enabling communication with various groups of recipients, both individual and collective, will be equipped with knowledge and skills of making media contacts (using online techniques), will be able to construct a text intended for various recipients: individual entities, as well as collective groups in the business model. The graduate of the specialization, thanks to the knowledge gained during the studies, will be predestined to work in institutions related to the business range, as well as institutions managing the cultural heritage - in cultural institutions or in relevant departments dealing with the culture of government and self-government administration bodies.

Film and media studies

The graduating student of this specialization should know and understand the specificity of modern audiovisual culture which includes film, modern media and digital technology. The learning goals of film and media studies specialization is to prepare the graduating student for working as a film critic and film and TV journalist who deals with film issues. Moreover, the graduating student will be prepared to work as a teacher specializing in film and media issues. After finishing the studies, the graduating student will be aware of the role of new media in culture and its influence on social reality; furthermore, the graduating student will be able to use this knowledge in analytical discourses and practical activities.

After completing the film and media studies specialization, the student will have deepen knowledge on history of Polish and international film, its theory and analysis. Student will also know the basis of film critic proficiency and gain the extensive and organised knowledge about the film’s relations with other media and other fields of art. Thanks to participation in workshops and film projections, student will acquire not only theoretical knowledge, but also practical skills.

CULTURE OF PODLASIE

Completion of the course ensures: a) equiping the graduate with basic historical and theoretical knowledge of the culture of the region, b) ability to analyze traditional material and spiritual culture, c) knowledge of ethnic specificity both of linguistic and religious region with consideration of its borderline character, d) ability to popularize and rationally nurture the value of regional, national, european and global culture, d) efficiency in promoting cultural heritage in institutional and non-institutional context.

Graduate of CULTURE OF PODLASIE specialty may take up a job in institutions and organizations established to carry out any activities related to culture of the region in a broader sense for example: in regional culture centers and appropriate administration units, culture-education centers and commercial institutions engaged folk culture (folklore or amateur art): in regional museums and in open-air museums, in editorial offices and information centers, in public opinion research centers, in advertising, marketing and public relations.
