Why cultural studies?

Studying Cultural Studies BA is an excellent choice for those interested in culture, media and social communication. It is a course that allows you not only to explore theory, but also to acquire practical skills that are used in the dynamically developing culture and media sector. We offer an interdisciplinary approach to culture that allows you to understand its mechanisms, its impact on society and its functioning in the context of the modern world.

The degree programme is aimed at creative people who are open to new challenges and who are interested in analysing culture, art, film, theatre, advertising and contemporary media. It is an excellent option for those who want not only to understand the world of culture, but also to actively participate in it - as animators, communication specialists, spokespersons, employees of cultural institutions or experts in advertising and public relations.

Study programme

Cultural studies of the first degree are humanistic studies based on lectures and classes in cultural anthropology, cultural theory, philosophy - especially philosophy of culture - as well as history of European culture, ethnography, art history, art theory, art anthropology, history and theory of cinema, theory and anthropology of television, history and theory of theatre, literary studies, and gender and childhood studies. The aim of the studies is to prepare students to write a bachelor's thesis and to defend it during the diploma (BA) examination. Graduates of the Cultural Studies Bachelor of Arts degree are awarded the academic degree of Bachelor of Arts. The study prepares graduates to undertake second-cycle studies - the master's degree.

Within the framework of the Bachelor's degree in Cultural Studies, we offer two elective specialisations that are practically oriented and help graduates find their way in the labour market:

- Media and Communication

- Advertising and public relations

The specialisation Media and Communication allows you to become familiar with theoretical knowledge in the field of media anthropology, television theory, narration in digital media, the structure of media in Poland, as well as language in media and media communication.

The Advertising and Public Relations specialisation provides an introduction to persuasive strategies used in advertising and public relations, the theory and history of advertising and public relations, the basics of marketing, the application of cultural anthropology in market research, the basics of copywriting, visual communication in advertising and public relations, and the basics of digital photography.

The graduate profile or what qualifications can be acquired in cultural studies of the first degree?

Cultural studies graduates will acquire knowledge in the fields of cultural history and theory, cultural communication, art history, theatre studies, film and media studies, regional studies as well as contemporary cultural life and cultural institutions. They are familiar with the economic mechanisms governing culture and the procedures for obtaining funds for culture - including EU funds. They are familiar with contemporary forms and ways of informing about and promoting cultural phenomena. The graduates of the first degree programme are able to use basic theoretical approaches, research paradigms and concepts typical of the cultural sciences in typical professional situations of employees of cultural or creative industry institutions.

Graduates of the Media and Communication specialisation acquire practical skills in the course of workshop classes, mainly concerning digital culture - analysis of audiovisual messages, digital storytelling, image creation in social media, communication behaviours in moderating relations between institutions and the media, used for example in the work of a press officer, as well as new information technologies applied in the digital media space.

Students of the Advertising and Public Relations specialisation usually work as marketing communication specialists, especially in the field of advertising and public relations, in all kinds of organisations, institutions and companies.

The first degree programme lasts six semesters.

The number of teaching hours is 1875.

The number of ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) credits a student should obtain is 183.
