prof. dr hab. Alicja Kisielewska
Prof. Kisielewska majored in cultural studies at the University of Łódź. She obtained her doctorate at the Faculty of Polish Studies at the University of Warsaw and her postdoctoral degree (Pol. habilitacja) at the Faculty of Philology of the University of Łódź. She has been working at the Faculty of Philology of the University of Białystok (formerly a branch of the University of Warsaw) since October, 1985. Since February 2018, she has been the director of the Interdepartmental Institute of Cultural Studies and Art. From 2011 until February 2018 she was the representative of the Dean of the Faculty of Philology for cultural studies and the chairwoman of the Academic Programme Council (Pol. Rada Naukowo-Programowa) for Cultural Studies. Since 2010 she has been the head of the Department of Knowledge about Culture, which in 2017 changed its name to the Department of Cultural and Media Studies. In 2009-2013 she was the vice-president of the Polish Society of Cultural Studies and since 2013 she has been a member of the Main Board of the Polish Society of Cultural Studies, as well as president of its Białystok Branch. She is also the chairwoman of the Regional Committee of Media Knowledge Olympiad. She is a member of the Polish Society of Film and Media Studies and the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies.
Prof. Kisielewska is a scholar with rich academic experience. She has supervised approximately 100 MA theses and one doctoral dissertation.
She participated in the international research project: National Mythologies in Central European TV Series. British Academy: Small Research Grants - SG 2010-11; 15 months (04.2012 – 06.2013).
As a cultural scholar, a film scholar, as well as a media scholar, she focuses her research activities on audio-visual culture, anthropology of television, cultural communication, and anthropology of culture. She is particularly interested in the semiotics of media messages, especially in television series.
She has performed the following functions at the University of Bialystok:
- Director of the Institute of Cultural Studies (since 2020)
- Director of the Inter-faculty Institute of Cultural Studies and Art (since February 2018)
- Director of the Department of Cultural and Media Studies (since 2010)
- Member of the Faculty Commission for Evaluation of Academic Teachers (2010 - 2016)
She has been a reviewer in the following Polish academic journals:
„Prace Kulturoznawcze”, „Studia Kulturoznawcze”, „Media, Kultura, Komunikacja Społeczna”.

Karolina Wierel, PhD, Vice-Dean for Educational Affairs
Karolina Wierel, PhD, assistant professor at the Department of Cultural and Media Studies at the University of Bialystok, cultural expert, philologist. She is interested in catastrophic and post-apocalyptic works, the motif of the Book in culture, the relationship between culture, literature and film, the history of orality and literacy, and contemporary currents of thought in the philosophy of culture, especially in the new humanities, ecological humanities, posthumanism, and post-secularism.
